Trading in Public Places Policy

The Shire of Collie would like to inform the Collie community that no decision has been made at this time regarding the proposed changes to public place trading in Collie. A draft Trading in Public Places policy has been advertised to seek community feedback.

At the Council meeting held on 13 October 2026, the Council resolved to defer a decision on the policy, allowing Councillors additional time to consider the proposed policy further before making any determination.

The Shire and Council acknowledge and appreciate the interest shown by community members and local businesses. The Council will now take time to workshop the draft policy before bringing it back to Council for a decision.

Mobile trading, referred to as trading in public places by local governments, is a common practice. In considering the advertised policy, Council aims to achieve the following benefits:

  • Economic development: Supporting local tourism and economic growth.
  • Place activation: Enhancing the vibrancy of public spaces, encouraging community participation, and promoting the use of accessible or under-utilised areas.
  • Enhanced community options: Providing foods and/or services that may not otherwise be available locally.
  • Support for local businesses: Protecting and growing the number of brick-and-mortar stores in the Central Business District and town by adopting fair rules that prevent negative impacts.

The Shire will keep the community informed as this process continues and thanks everyone for their feedback to date.
